Mike Nichols gives us a happy marriage that suddenly slams on its breaks in Heartburn.* I’m not a fan of Jack Nicholson** and was surprised to find him a chilled-out, easier-to-watch dude who nicely offset Meryl Streep’s performance, plus I enjoyed that darling red-headed baby.*** This is full of great lines and a great selection of 1986-era clothing, plus Kevin Spacey’s first film role, and various 80s-style ridiculous situations.

After disliking Noah Centineo so intently in The Perfect Date, I was gun-shy of To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, but Michael Fimognari managed to include enough good relationship things* that I came away satisfied. And sometimes in a woman’s life there is a period where the boys come out of the woodwork, and this is rarely represented on film, so that was fun. This is solid, middle-tier movie making, perfect for two hours of untroubled movie viewing.**

The film includes a great combo of early digital and practical effects and was a good choice for a Valentine’s Day viewing.**

2020 Oscar Nominated Animated Shorts

Overall:

I came out of the Animated Shorts feeling defeated and depressed. Thank goodness for the wacky Hors Piste—a bonus feature, and the very brief Maestro. All of the shorts this year are about death or loss, mostly directly, sometimes tangentially.

Also, these reviews aren’t necessarily going to be three sentences each.


Hair Love (7 minutes)

A girl wants to make her hair look nice, but despite online tutorial vidoes, is too young to have the skills. Her father is nervous, but willing to try. Very sweet and funny, this is the feel-good short.

The verdict: Good

Dcera (Daughter) (15 minutes)

Stop motion animation with papier-mâché figures that focuses on a father and daughter relationship. Aside from being depressing, the animation of the eyeballs weirded me out. This was a very long fifteen minutes.

Sister (8 minutes)

Felted dolls tell this story about a man’s childhood memories of his sister. In places, the animation was weird in a good way and this story hit me hard. This was my favorite.

Kitbull (9 minutes)

This is Pixar-adjacent, the story of a feral kitten who makes a new friend. I was all in for the antics of the black feral kitten (my home includes a formerly feral, now-grown kitten who jumped around just like this one) but another animal was in danger in a way that made me angry and after that I was having none of this short.

Memorable (12 minutes)

Another stop-motion animated entry, this was the most artsy of the bunch. In it, a painter and his wife experience changes. It illustrated a depressing topic in beautiful color and motion.

Shorts TV, the organization who distributes the Oscar-Nominated films to theaters, probably couldn’t justify sending out a 51-minute program. So there was some padding added. And thank goodness, because the last two shorts managed to turn around the depressing topics.


Henrietta Bulkowski (16 minutes)

Another stop-motion entry, this is the story of a woman with kyphosis (when the spine curves and gives a hunchback) who wants to be a pilot. I enjoyed how fantastically weird this film was.

The Bird and the Whale (6 minutes)

This was gorgeous. It’s 4,300 paintings on glass paired with an original score by Chris McLoughlin. But when you have a bird in a cage as the sole survivor of a shipwreck, you’ve got an animal in peril and that’s a no-go for me.

Hors Piste (5 minutes)

God bless Hors Piste for its tale of mountain rescue workers whose mission doesn’t go as planned. The CGI brings a funny veneer to the story and the poor fellow being rescued has increasingly amusing expressions.

This is two minutes of a squirrel directing a cast of forest animals in a bit of opera. There’s nothing not to like here.

Richard Jewell Includes Good Acting, Director Opinions

The review:

Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell is a little too clear about the director’s feelings about the media and the F.B.I.,* but what this film does well is ably recreate the somewhat claustrophobic circumstances Richard Jewell is reduced to when the tables are turned on him.** I was excited to see Paul Walter Hauser as the titular character and I thought it was unfortunate he didn’t make the cut for Best Actor.*** The rest of the cast was also good and I like that Jewell’s sad-but-true story got movie status.

The verdict: Good

Cost: $6.00
Where watched: Jubitz Theater (The audience included five other women and one man, which I thought was an interesting distribution. Also, the man would not stop talking to his movie-going companion. This is the second Jubitz feature in a row where the audience gets a D for etiquette)

*Both are bad. Very bad. Very, very bad. You can’t believe how bad they are. Although you can when you watch this movie because both institutions might as well have had a neon arrow saying BAD pointing at them through the duration of the film.
**I’ve lived in apartment complexes like the one depicted in the film and while they are fine places to live, they can seem dark and claustrophobic, especially when you spend most of your day in them.
***He was great at still being sympathetic and likable even while being off-putting and making not good choices. That’s a high tightrope to walk. Nomination-wise, I would have subbed him in for Johnathan Pryce’s Pope Francis.

1917: Does the Movie Deserve Accolades?

The review:

Sam Mendes’s 1917 is vacuuming up all the praise and it’s very good at being a tense war movie that is crafted as if it was filmed in one shot.* And yet, when we step a bit back from the cinematography shenanigans, is there enough story? I’m feeling torn, but I can tell you that I enjoyed both Dean-Charles Chapman** and George MacKay, *** I found one scene late at night in a town unbelievable, and I thought the depictions of rats was on point.****

The verdict: Good

(There will be much grumbling if this wins Best Picture. Not Green Book levels of grumbling—there will be no assigned reading—but grumbling nevertheless)

His advantage was that he was only 5’4″ tall, and was often hidden by the battleground’s winter mist that usually hung as high as 6 feet. And after soldiering for two years in the muddy trenches, grandfather Alfred had a lifelong habit of constantly washing his hands. Yet, he never talked about his wartime experience until he was in his 70s.

Beautiful Boy: A Father/Son Tale of Addiction

The review:

Felix van Groeningen’s Beautiful Boy follows the standard drug addict movie format;* the difference here is that the father-son relationship is the focus. I loved the performances of both Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet** and that the movie doesn’t point to a cause of the addiction, just the things that happen because of it. While I don’t feel this broke any new ground on the drug addict movie front, there was a lot worth watching.

The verdict: Good

(I’ve been stalking this movie for months now and it’s been stuck behind the Amazon paywall and has too many holds at the library)

Honey Boy: Sometimes Recovery Means a Fine Movie

The review:

Alma Har’el’s Honey Boy stuck with me after the credits had rolled, and it excelled at balancing the story of young Otis and his father with older Otis and his PTSD.* The scenes of LaBeouf’s questionable parenting choices were a great counterpoint to the scenes with rehab counselors.** While this movie lacked an ending*** it’s worth seeing for the performances and the nuance around what love looks like when you have a stunted alcoholic dad cheering for you.

The review:

Noah Baumbach’s Margot at the Wedding has the usual pre-Gerwig vibe* of disaffected adults who speak with a bored affect** and are their own worst enemies. And while that first sentence sounds like I didn’t like the film, this second sentence is here to say that I greatly enjoyed this movie from the performances to the ridiculous actions taken by the characters.*** Chalk this up as yet another Baumbach film with people I couldn’t be in the room with in real life, but greatly enjoy on screen.

The review:

Richard Linklater does a great job transforming Where’d You Go, Bernadette from an epistolary novel into a coherent film—though the film stumbles at the end. I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would, mostly because Cate Blanchett having a mental crisis is so much fun to watch.* There’s a big, old, moldering house,** some really great mean girl mom stuff,*** good performances by Billy Crudup and Emma Nelson (in her debut: she plays Bernadette’s daughter) plus a bunch of bit parts with actors I love.****

The verdict: Good

(I greatly enjoyed this book and can recommend it.)
