I double checked to see what Svetlana said about where she was before I posted, but she just went with the generic "Russia." Postcrossing has really done a lot of enlighten me at how the big monolith I still think of as the U.S.S.R. is so incredibly diverse. I'm always worried I will say "Russia" and offend a person who lives in her own country that is NOT RUSSIA!
I wasn't trying to correct anybody as much as give props to Ukraine. The USSR was indeed made up of all those countries, and even when people are born in one region they might consider themselves ethnically from another place. Now that I actually checked Wikipedia, I find nothing about Ukraine and Gagarin. There is tons of stuff with his name on it, though, and I remember somebody telling me he was Ukrainian, but maybe I'm completely wrong.
Awesome! I love getting black & white portraits. I wish I got more of them. And I don't think I knew what Yuri Gagarin looked like before either.
Gagarin was actually Ukrainian! I just bought Gagarin earrings that look much like this in Lviv.

That said, I'm very interested in these earrings.

Interesting! All of the above. Interesting.
