Three sentence movie reviews–I’ve Loved You So Long.

I’m jealous of Kristen Scott Thomas’ ability to make a French movie where she speaks French like a native–though they did have to throw in a line about her living in England for a long time. The tension in this movie comes from not knowing and the slow reveal keeps you hooked. This movie is also a nice tutorial on middle aged, middle class French fashion, which I found delightful.

By the way, this totally meets the Bechdel standard: Two women? Yes! Who talk to each other? Yes! About something besides a man? Yes!

Three sentence movie reviews–De-Lovely

Cole Porter’s story is ultimately a sad once, a fact which couldn’t be overcome by peppy musical numbers, pretty costumes or good acting. It was fun to hear so many Cole Porter songs, and the aging of the characters was well done. I didn’t love this movie.

Three sentence movie reviews: Hot Tub Time Machine

Four separate times during the movie Matt leaned over and said, “Remember, you were the one who chose this movie.” And indeed there was a lot–from a feminist perspective alone–to quibble with during the show. However, I thought they had a particularly brilliant way of showing the 40-ish actors as 20-year-olds and there were some laugh-out-loud funny parts.

Three sentence movie reviews: Serenity

It’s still a tragedy this show was canceled so early on. The characters still are fabulous, lovable and funny. As good as this movie is, it doesn’t make up for the fact that we never got even a full season of the series Firefly.

Three sentence movie reviews: Frank Lloyd Wright

I’ve just finished T.C. Boyle’s book the Women and had to see Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin. Who better to show me than Ken Burns? Very nicely done documentary with a insight into FLW’s life.

Three sentence movie reviews: Mama Mia

Kinda slow and mostly vapid and you would be better off seeing it as live theater where you can hear so many people sing along. That said, it does have Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried who are always delightful to watch. And Pierce Brosnan’s singing wasn’t nearly as bad as I was led to believe.

Three sentence movie reviews: She’s Having a Baby

I enjoyed watching this movie about a couple just starting out, though I disagreed with many of their choices. Kevin Bacon was great, as were the rest of the actors. Watching it, I could tell that this was heavily drawn from John Hughes life, which probably had me overlooking any flaws.

Three sentence movie reviews: The Runaways

Gripping drama about rock-n-roll and being perhaps a little too young for things that come your way. Both Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart are so good you forget that they are Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart. Great costumes too.

Bechdel score: Has two women? Yes. Who talk to each other? Yes. About something besides a man? Yes!

Three sentence movie reviews: Raw Faith

A small amount of bias goes into this review, because the subject of this documentary is our former Senior Minister*. Still, I was surprised at how touching this movie was, and very funny in places. This is a good documentary for people in transition.

*you can see me for about three seconds in one scene, standing in the balcony in church. My goal during filming was to NOT be on camera and I almost succeeded. However, if you ask Matt, he will tell you he’s dating a movie star.

Three sentence movie reviews: Iron Man 2

Continuing the tradition of seeing a superhero movie in celebration of our anniversary, we caught up with Tony Stark. I found this movie to be great fun, especially with the always excellent Don Cheadle replacing the mediocre Terrance Howard. Also, I finally find a movie when I can stand to watch Mickey Rourke and, (plus!) Sam Rockwell was awesome, as usual.
