Vintage Cakes: Lovelight Chocolate Chiffon Cake with Chocolate Whipped Cream

It’s time to celebrate Mom’s birthday so I whipped up this confection.

This cake also happens to be on the back of the book.  Hers looks a lot better.

I find that I’m not a huge fan of cakes with whipped cream.  I think maybe I don’t whip it long enough, but there’s always this dire warning about whipping it too long, because it will curdle, so I get nervous.  Plus, everything slides with whipped cream. I should have skewered the cake to keep things in place.

It tasted good, though.

Three sentence movie reviews: Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Finding a movie that will please myself, my 70-something mother and my boyfriend is a tall order–one that usually involves pre-watching.  I had no time to pre-watch, so I took a deep breath and took my chances and, boy howdy, did it pay off.  This movie is funny (but with no pooping) and sweet (but not too sweet) and tragic (but not too dark) and everyone was quite pleased.

Cost: $4.99 from Amazon
Where watched: at Mom’s house with Mom and Matt

Three sentence movie reviews: The Station Agent

The tagline on the poster says it all.  I’m not sure why I put off watching this for so many years.  If you need a quality movie with a little bit of everything, this is your film.

Cost: free from library
Where watched: at home

The rest of the buildings on the block that will go away.

I realized that though I had featured the buildings on one side of the block, I hadn’t taken a proper picture of the other part of the block that will go away.

On the right we have the EUROCAR building.  It’s a nice looking one with some good windows.  It’s been empty for a very long time.On the left is the Jimmy Mak’s building with the sign saying “Jazz” still illuminated.  The marquee says, “Thanks for 20 years. We love you Jimmy.  Fuck Cancer”

Cute thank you postcard

In thanks for the baby blanket I made for Baby M, I received this delightful card.  It’s not only cute, it also features the blanket I knitted for the former baby M.  It’s the top middle photo.  Apparently the knitted blanket got a lot of use after the current baby M was born.

As you can see, the former baby M has grown quite a bit since 2013.
